In 1999, at
a Classroom Connect Conference, I was introduced to the idea of
Online Projects. The presenter was talking about David
Warlick's Global Grocery Project and I wondered about collecting
data on just ONE item rather than several. At the the time, I was
also teaching students about gathering information for Science Fair
Projects -- so I posted to an EdTech Group the following email:
"Please
ask your students how they eat an OREO cookie. Do they bite, nibble,
insert entire cookie, or other."
I received over
100 responses......and that was the beginning of the O.R.E.O. project.
Since that time,
over 42,000 students have enjoyed using the oreo cookie as a manipulative
within their classrooms! We have had participants from 48 states,
as well as Canada, Australia, Africa, New Zealand, Europe, Brazil,
and various other locations!
This year (due
to diet and health constraints in many schools) will be our LAST
year of the O.R.E.O. project. I have enjoyed every single project
with you and hope that you have as well.
Please email
me with any questions you might have regarding this project or past
projects.
Jennifer
