Between now and February
2, put out a penny can. Invite students to bring in
pennies each day (Or the teacher can collect their
own penny change each day). You do NOT want to know
the exact count of pennies until the day you do the
project.
On the day of the project,
each student will estimate how many pennies are in
the can. This number will need to be recorded. It
is up to the teacher to decide HOW the pennies will
be distributed for class count.
When all pennies have
been counted, students will compare their estimation
to the exact count.
Set the room up in centers.
a. Book Center (books on Abraham Lincoln)
b. Art Center (craft on Abraham Lincoln)
c. Math Center (students will count pennies in 2's
and 5's)
d. Journal Center (students will create journal of
days events)
e. Trivia Center (students learn about the penny -
teachers will need older pennies if they wish to compare
how the penny has changed)
Have your students travel
through each center. You may wish to have parents
help.
If you wish, consider
taking pictures throughout the day and upload them
to an online photo album (such as One
True Media) & then send me the link!

or perhaps buy some books for your school library.
